Fibromyalgia Q & A

What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder that causes musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, disrupted sleep, waking tired despite long periods of sleep, difficulties with concentration and memory, mood issues and widespread pain, often described as a constant and chronic dull ache. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), some five million adults in this country have fibromyalgia. Most sufferers – between 80% to 90% – are women, and most are also middle-aged. Fibromyalgia is frequently compared to arthritis due to the debilitating muscle pain and fatigue it causes. However, unlike arthritis, fibromyalgia doesn’t actually cause damage to joints, muscles or tissue.

What causes fibromyalgia?

The cause of fibromyalgia is not entirely understood, but researchers believe it is connected to problems in how the central nervous system processes pain. Researchers also suspect that genes may play a role. Several genes have been identified that occur more commonly in fibromyalgia patients. In addition, patients with other specific illnesses, such as tension headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, and rheumatoid arthritis, among others, are more likely to have fibromyalgia.
