Neck Pain Q & A

How common is neck pain?

Neck pain is the third leading cause of chronic pain in this country, affecting over a quarter of Americans. Neck pain is also a major cause of headaches.

What are the most common causes of neck pain?

The neck is delicate, strong and flexible, all at the same time. It is made up of six cervical discs, which provide cushioning between seven vertebrae, which connect the skull to the thoracic (upper) spine. It is also composed of muscles and ligaments. The neck supports the head, which on average weighs about 15 pounds. That’s a lot of weight for a small, thin set of bones and soft tissues, which is why strong head movements can lead to neck damage. Some of the most common causes of neck pain are:

  • Poor posture.
  • Poor ergonomics, such as working at a computer for too long without changing position.
  • Jerking the neck during exercise.
  • Whiplash, most often the result of a rear-end auto collisions in which the head is jerked backward and then forward.

What is the difference between acute and chronic neck pain?

Acute pain begins suddenly but does not last long-term. It generally resolves in less than six weeks. However, acute pain sometimes turns into chronic pain. Pain that lasts for months and even years. Chronic pain may be "on" and "off" or continuous. Chronic pain involves all aspects of your life. It may affect people to the point that they can't work, eat properly, participate in physical activity, or enjoy life.
