It is made up of six cervical discs, which provide cushioning between seven vertebrae, which connect the skull to the thoracic (upper) spine. It is also composed of muscles and ligaments. The neck supports the head, which on average weighs about 15 pounds. Acute pain begins suddenly but does not last long-term. It generally resolves in less than six weeks. However, acute pain sometimes turns into chronic pain. Pain that lasts for months and even years. Chronic pain may be "on" and "off" or continuous. Chronic pain involves all aspects of your life.
