What interventional pain management means
Interventional pain medicine focuses on identifying the structures and nerve pathways that may be contributing to pain, then considering targeted diagnostic or treatment options when they fit the working diagnosis.
Care can include education, medication review, rehabilitation planning, diagnostic testing, image guided injections, nerve procedures, or device based therapies. Not every patient needs a procedure, and an interventional evaluation does not guarantee that one will be recommended.
02
How evaluation guides treatment
Similar symptoms can have different causes. A visit may include a review of when symptoms began, what makes them better or worse, how they affect daily activity, and what treatments or tests have already been tried.
The clinician may examine movement, strength, sensation, reflexes, or joint function and review relevant records or imaging. Additional testing is useful only when it can clarify the diagnosis or change the plan.
03
When a targeted procedure may be discussed
A procedure may be considered when the suspected pain source is sufficiently clear, the expected benefit is meaningful, and the risks and alternatives make sense for the individual. Some injections provide treatment, some provide diagnostic information, and some may serve both purposes.
Before proceeding, ask what structure is being targeted, what the procedure can and cannot show, what alternatives remain, which complications matter, and how the result will guide the next decision.
