Radiofrequency Ablation vs. Epidural Steroid Injection — Key Differences

Both procedures are discussed for selected pain patterns, but they target different structures and answer different clinical questions.

How Each Procedure Works

Radiofrequency ablation uses a targeted probe near selected nerves. Epidural steroid injection places medication in the epidural space under image guidance when reducing nerve-root inflammation is part of the plan.

What Conditions Each Treats

RFA may be discussed for selected facet-joint-related back or neck pain. Epidural injections may be discussed for selected sciatica, herniated-disc, or spinal-stenosis patterns.

How Long Does Each Last?

Results vary. Neither procedure guarantees relief, and the clinician should explain what the response would mean for the next step.

Which One Is Right for Me?

An evaluation connects the symptom pattern, examination, relevant records, and risks with the treatment decision.

Different procedures may be discussed at different points when the suspected pain source changes or more than one source is being evaluated.
